Chapter 14

(DAN)

TALK about high drama, my body is tingling I’m so amped up from it. I’m actually afraid people are going to start throwing punches right here in the library. Or worse. I hope Julian was exaggerating about his father bringing a gun to a fist fight, because I don’t want to die tonight.

Julian, son and heir of Morris Wakefield’s fortune, has just dropped the biggest bomb possible on his homophobic father. Fucking nuked his ass. Maybe none of us will get out of here alive.

But I’m supporting Julian no matter what. He deserves to live his own life, and dammit I’m becoming attached to him. It makes me a little sick to think of walking away now.

I’m in too deep.

He sniffs against my neck, his sudden burst of tears drying quickly. The guy was so overwrought with emotion, it was scary. But he’s got good reason. Stifling my true nature for only a couple of weeks has nearly driven me crazy. Hell, I was crying on his shoulder in the beach house earlier in the day about the same damn thing, and I haven’t had to deal with it a fraction of the time he has, or on nearly the same level. It’s a wonder he’s got any sanity left.

I feel his lips move softly against my neck for just one second in a tiny covert kiss that makes my knees weak. He wants me. He’s willing to incur the wrath of his father and everyone in the room to have me. That knowledge alone means so much to me. I’ve never had anyone want me so much, or wanted anyone back the way I want him.

I squeeze the back of his neck in acknowledgment of the kiss. “I’m here for you,” I whisper in his ear. “No backing down.”

He stands up straight and wipes his eyes with the back of his sleeve, then draws himself up into his signature ultra-confident stance. “Alright, old man…” He addresses his father directly, unflinchingly. “Those are the only tears you’ll see out of me over this. I am who I am, and if you can’t accept it, then I guess we have nothing more to say to each other. For my whole life, I’ve contorted my goddamn soul to try to please you. But no more. This is the end of the line for that.”

His father doesn’t say anything, and neither does anyone else. Frank Garrison stands off to one side comforting his crying daughter. Avery’s face is stoic as she watches the scene unfold. Julian’s mother hovers nearby, offering silent support.

“Well,” Julian says in a strong voice. “If we’re done here, Dan and I are going upstairs.”

Still, no one speaks. Mrs. Wakefield nods and smiles kindly at us, and Julian grabs me by the hand and pulls me from the silent room.

Thank God.

Once we’re alone in the upstairs hallway, Julian pushes me against the wall and buries his face in the space where my shoulder meets my neck and takes a deep, shuddering breath.
